Do I need to have Four Wheel Driving Experience?
No! Your trip has been designed to ensure maximum enjoyment with maximum safety. We get you off the beaten track so that you get to see ‘Remote New Zealand Journeys’ without having to spend precious days winching and digging your vehicles out of mud holes! We do however spend a lot of time on back-country loose metal roads with river crossings and driving that requires your full attention. Our tours are interesting and varied with plenty of excitement in the conditions that we encounter. On arrival you will be briefed by your guides as to the conditions that you will come across, our detailed safety plan and information on ‘rules of the road’ in New Zealand. We work hard to ensure your time in NZ is a safe and enjoyable experience.
Is there a chance of me getting lost on the tour and what happens if my vehicle breaks down?
You will be briefed by your guides daily and given instructions on what to do when the unexpected occurs.
Each vehicle will have hand held radios so you can communicate with your guides easily. Your guides are there to ensure your safety. If you do drop behind or become temporarily ‘lost’ for any reason you will be fully aware of the safety plan in respect to this.
What time should I arrive on Day 1 & depart on the last day?
Day 1 of all our adventure travel tours is the day when your guides meet you for the first time and you pick up your vehicle. Our meeting point is the Nelson Airport at the Hertz Car Rental Counter.
The last day is the official departure day so you can depart at any time on this day. You will need to return your car at the latest by 5 pm or earlier if you are flying from Queenstown and the drop off point is at Queenstown Airport. If you wish to keep your vehicle to continue your adventures then we need be advised upon booking so we can reserve this for you (an additional cost will apply). If you need additional accommodation at either end of the tour then please advise upon booking and we will make these reservations for you. If you are travelling from overseas to join the tour, we strongly recommend you schedule your arriving flights so you have at least a full 24 hours to rest and adjust to the time difference before commencing the tour. Tours leave as scheduled – there are no delayed starts so you need to ensure you are there when the tour begins.

Do we really need to do a guided trip?
Remote New Zealand Journeys guides are passionate about their country and love showing it off! They develop great relationships at every destination and our clients are treated accordingly. On a guided trip you’ll get to pass through gateways and travel on roads that the public at large do not use or in some cases do not have access to. If you have a limited amount of time, you will not be able to do as much on your own due to fully booked hotels in popular places, having to research and plan your route meticulously to avoid delays etc. During the setup for this tour we travelled 4500kms! On this tour you cover around 2000kms. This gives you an idea of how much time could be lost to find your way if you wanted to do this on your own. Your guides are always on hand to ensure that your journey proceeds smoothly and that your New Zealand experience is unique and memorable! The tour is shaped and guided by people who know and love your destination.

Will I feel awkward travelling on my own and will I have to share a room?
Although most Remote New Zealand Journeys clients come with friends or partners, some may come alone, perhaps because their friends have different interests or budgets. Solo travellers will be roomed singly so that at all times you have your own space to relax…you might come alone, by the end of the tour you will have many new friends for life! (Single supplement applies)
Can I still be independent on a group tour?
We encourage all our clients to be as independent as possible. After arriving in a new town you will have free time to go off on your own or with other group members. On selected nights we dine as a group, but it is up to you to decide how much time you wish to spend with other group members. Even the most independent travellers don't like sitting alone in bars or restaurants and the joy of group adventure travel is that there is always someone around to link up with when you want to.
Are meals included & is food available for vegetarians?
Excellent meals ought to be a high point of every holiday so it’s important to know not just how many meals are included in the cost of your tour but what kind! Our tours have been developed to ensure you enjoy a range of superb meals, some at “white-tablecloth” restaurants, other times fine cuisine served in our hotels! Lunches range from locally prepared ‘High Country Station’ lunches to gourmet picnics. At the time of booking we will ask you to specify any dietary requirements that you may have so we can advise the chefs and have the appropriate food available.

What responsibilities do I assume as a client?
Clients are responsible for arriving at the start of the trip with the clothing and the gear we recommend; respecting the laws and customs of New Zealand; following environmental guidelines and regulations while on the trip; and respecting the rights and privacy of other trip members. An individual may be asked to leave a trip if the guide feels that the person's continuing participation may prove detrimental to the individual or to the well-being and enjoyment of other guests.
How many people will be on my tour?
Do you want to travel in a crowd? Remote New Zealand Journeys limits the number of travellers on its departures to a maximum of 10. The effect on your tour experience is huge - small friendly groups make a one-to-one relationship with your guide and other travellers possible…this allows you to eat at authentic restaurants and stay at charming, intimate hotels where large groups cannot or will not be accommodated… they bring you into contact with the locals, not as part of an anonymous crowd, but as an individual meeting individuals.
Are children welcome on all Remote New Zealand Journeys trips?
Due to some of the long driving days and remoteness of some parts of our trip, not all children will enjoy the tour and this may affect your enjoyment also. If your considering bring your children please feel free to contact us as we are more than happy to create a ‘tailor-made’ private tour to suit your family’s needs.
Will I have internet access en route?
Many places we stay at have internet access and some towns too have internet cafes.
When is the best time to visit weather wise?
Many of the roads we travel on are impassable during the winter due to heavy snow fall so we have scheduled departures to make the most of the best weather!
Could I do this trip much cheaper on my own?
Yes, you could if you have the time to research and plan your journey meticulously. You’d also have to give up the safety of the convoy and knowledgeable guides!
Am I suited to a Remote New Zealand Journeys tour?
We have dedicated our time to bringing you an unforgettable experience, fantastic guides, luxurious accommodation and delicious food. Due to the nature of four-wheel driving tours, the content of our days cannot be guaranteed nor can arrival times at each destination! However if you are young at heart, flexible, and have a sense of humour then our tours are definitely for you!
I want to relax. Will Remote New Zealand Journeys Exclusive Adventures tour and hassle free Exclusive Adventures be the best holiday for me?
There is free time on all tours and a full day is spent at each of our destinations allowing you to do as much or as little as you want, read a book, enjoy a massage or take drive through the countryside. However some travelling days can be long and there will be the odd early morning start (8am) to maximise your sightseeing. We are committed to your enjoyment of the tour – our schedules are carefully planned for your hassel free enjoyment.
What is the best way to carry my money?
New Zealand's unit of currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZ$). Foreign currency can easily be exchanged at banks, some hotels and Bureau de Change kiosks, which are found at international airports and most city centres. All major credit cards can be used in New Zealand. Travellers Cheques are accepted at hotels, banks and some stores. ATM's are the easiest way to withdraw money BUT you should never rely solely on them and always have a back-up of cash/travellers cheques just in case.
What kind of luggage should I bring?
There is no limit to the amount of luggage you can carry during the trip since you will have your own vehicle, however please bear in mind the weight restrictions imposed by the airlines. Also too, remember you will want to put all valuables and baggage out of sight when your vehicle is left unattended and this will probably mean storing all baggage in your hotel room at each destination for peace of mind. For your enjoyment of the tour – we recommend one suitcase or large holdall per person plus one day-pack for day to day use to carry a camera, water bottle, jumper etc.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, you will require travel insurance. You will need to provide us with details such as the insurance company, policy number and emergency contact number for next of kin before the start of the tour. Please make sure you know exactly what you are covered for, remembering there are many adventure activities available as optional excursions en route.
Are there any poisonous animals in New Zealand?
New Zealand has no snakes or dangerous wild animals, making it safe for visitors to enjoy outdoor activities.
What is the voltage of electricity supply in New Zealand? Do I need to take a converter?
Electricity is supplied throughout New Zealand at 230/240 volts (50 hertz), although most hotels and motels provide 110 volt AC sockets (rated at 20 watts) for electric razors only. For all other equipment, an adapter/converter is necessary, unless the item has a multi-voltage option. Please note that power outlets only accept flat three or two-pin plugs, depending on whether an earth connection is fitted.
How do I ensure I'm viewing the latest version of your website?
If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser you can set your Internet Options to always check for the latest version the webpage being viewed. To do this, simply click on Tools - Internet Options... then under the General tab locate Browsing History, click it's Settings button; under Temporary Internet Files, Check for newer versions of stored pages make sure "Every time I visit the webpage" is selected, then click OK, OK.
